Longhedge Railway Works

Longhedge Railway Works, established in 1862 in Battersea, South London, was a significant locomotive and carriage manufacturing facility for the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. Initially built to support the new Victoria terminus, it played a crucial role in locomotive repair and construction, particularly under the leadership of notable superintendents like William Kirtley. The works produced various locomotive classes until the mid-20th century, transitioning to light repairs before its closure in the 1950s. Today, the site is home to the Stewarts Lane Traction Maintenance Depot, marking a shift from steam to electric train servicing, making it a point of interest for railway enthusiasts and historians alike.
