Donegana's Hotel

Donegana's Hotel, originally built in 1821 as a private residence for American millionaire William Bingham, served as the vice-regal residence for Canada's Governors General from 1837 to 1843. After being transformed into the largest hotel in the British Colonies by Jean-Marie Donegana, it gained fame comparable to New York's Astor House, offering luxurious amenities and hosting notable guests, including the family of ex-President Jefferson Davis. The hotel was destroyed in the Montreal Riots of 1849 but was rebuilt shortly after, continuing to thrive until it became the first home of Notre-Dame Hospital in 1880. Today, the site is a significant historical landmark in Old Montreal, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage.
