Highland Mall - Austin’s first regional shopping mall and site redevelopment

Highland Mall opened in 1971 as Austin’s first regional shopping mall. After decades as a retail center it closed as a traditional mall in the 2010s and was redeveloped into the ACC Highland campus and a mixed-use district. The site’s conversion from an enclosed mall to a community-college campus and neighborhood has been widely cited as a notable urban-redevelopment project in Austin.
