Cliveden (Benjamin Chew House)

Cliveden is an 18th-century country house built in 1767 for Benjamin Chew and designated a National Historic Landmark. The stone mansion was the site of heavy fighting during the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, when British forces occupied the house and surrounding grounds. Today Cliveden operates as a historic site interpreting colonial architecture, the Chew family history, and the battle’s local impact.
