The Star-Spangled Banner (original flag)

The original Star-Spangled Banner, a roughly 30 by 34-foot garrison flag sewn by Mary Pickersgill in 1813, is preserved and displayed by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. It is the flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key's poem that became the U.S. national anthem. The textile is a uniquely large, heavily conserved artifact and remains one of the museum's most visited and studied objects.
