Rivington Street municipal bath

The Rivington Street municipal bath, opened in 1901, was New York City's first public bathhouse funded by the city, located in the densely populated Lower East Side. It featured 67 spray baths and accommodated up to 3,000 bathers daily, primarily serving the local Hebrew, Hungarian, and Russian Jewish communities. The establishment was part of a broader initiative following a 1895 law mandating public baths in large cities. However, as private showers became more common, the bath's popularity waned, leading to its closure in 1975. Today, the site, now known as 326 Delancy Street, is a point of interest for redevelopment discussions.
