Grumblethorpe - Wister family home and Revolutionary damage

Grumblethorpe is the mid-18th-century Germantown country house of the Wister family, constructed around 1744 and associated with John Wister. During the 1777 British occupation of Philadelphia and the Battle of Germantown, British and Hessian troops entered and ransacked the house; the property retains physical evidence and documentary records of that episode. The site operates as a museum interpreting colonial domestic life and the local Revolutionary-era experience.
