Beers and St. John Company Coach Inn

The Beers and St. John Company Coach Inn, located west of West Liberty, Iowa, is a historic site that dates back to the early 1840s when it served as a vital swing station for stagecoaches delivering U.S. Mail between Iowa City and Muscatine. Built by Egbert T. Smith and his partners, this two-story frame structure reflects architectural influences from Smith's previous home in New York. The inn was a key crossroads for travelers until the arrival of the railroad in 1855, after which it was converted into a private residence. Notable features included an octagonal glass cupola and spacious gathering areas. The property is also the final resting place for Smith's wife and other individuals who passed away while staying there. Recognized for its historical significance, the inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, making it an intriguing destination for tourists and researchers interested in Iowa's early transportation history.
