Great House (Cape Ann)

The Great House in Cape Ann, built in the 17th century by colonists in Gloucester, Massachusetts, is notable for being the first house of its kind in New England. Originally constructed by Thomas Gardner and his group of 'old planters,' the house featured a Tudor and Elizabethan design with a sharp pitch-roof. In 1628, it was disassembled and relocated to Salem to serve as the Governor's House. This historic structure hosted significant events, including Governor John Winthrop's first meal in the New World in 1630. Although it underwent modifications over the years, including the addition of a third story in 1792, a replica was created in Pioneer Village to commemorate Salem's 300th anniversary, preserving its legacy for future visitors and researchers.
