Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist

On March 18, 1990, two men posing as police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole 13 works of art, including pieces attributed to Vermeer and Rembrandt, in the largest-value art theft in U.S. history. The stolen works-estimated at about $500 million-have never been recovered and the museum still displays the empty frames. The theft remains an active investigation and a persistent unsolved mystery in Boston.
