Eastern State Penitentiary historic prison and museum

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 and was architecturally influential for its radial cellblock design and early use of solitary confinement as a penal method. The prison housed notable inmates including Al Capone and was operational as a prison until 1971. Today the site operates as a museum offering guided tours, exhibits about prison history, and seasonal programs that highlight its preserved cellblocks and ruinous architecture.
