Fairfield House, Nelson

Fairfield House, located at 48 Van Diemen Street in Nelson, New Zealand, is a historic building registered as a Category I structure by Heritage New Zealand. Originally constructed in 1849 and rebuilt in 1872 for Arthur Atkinson, the house has a rich history, including serving as a boarding house for the Nelson College for Girls. After surviving the 1929 Murchison earthquake, it was at risk of demolition until a community group intervened. Notably, Atkinson, who had an interest in astronomy, added an observation tower in 1883 to observe celestial events. Although the original tower was demolished, a replica now stands, and the house currently functions as a community center, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in New Zealand's heritage.
