Hole-in-the-Rock (Papago Park)

Hole-in-the-Rock is a natural red sandstone formation in Papago Park featuring wind- and water-eroded cavities and a prominent opening that frames views across the Salt River valley. The site contains petroglyphs and evidence of use by the Hohokam people; some archaeologists suggest the hollow was used to observe solar positions, an interpretation that is debated. A short, well-traveled trail from the park/Desert Botanical Garden area leads directly to the formation.
