Escape Cliffs

Escape Cliffs is a historic settlement site located on the northern coast of the Northern Territory, Australia, approximately 60 km northeast of Darwin. Named by John Lort Stokes of HMS Beagle in 1840 after a harrowing escape from hostile Aboriginal men, it represents the fourth failed attempt to establish a permanent settlement in Australia's Top End. The site was chosen in 1864 by Lieutenant Colonel Boyle Travers Finniss, who faced numerous challenges including local resistance, unsuitable land conditions, and internal conflicts. Ultimately deemed unviable, the settlement was abandoned by 1867, paving the way for future successful endeavors in the region, including the establishment of Darwin. Today, Escape Cliffs is part of the Djukbinj National Park and is recognized for its historical significance, having been listed on the Northern Territory Heritage Register in 2000.
