Pier 39

Pier 39 opened in 1978 as a waterfront shopping and entertainment center at Fisherman's Wharf and remains a major San Francisco tourist destination. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake a large colony of California sea lions began hauling out on nearby docks, and the animals have since been a noted attraction associated with the pier. Pier 39 also houses restaurants, shops, an arcade, a carousel, and links to bay cruises and aquarium exhibits.
