Massachusetts State House dome

The Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill was completed in 1798 and was designed by architect Charles Bulfinch. Its gilded dome, originally wooden and later covered with copper, was gilded with gold leaf beginning in the 1870s and remains a prominent visual landmark overlooking the neighborhood and Boston Common. The building houses the offices of the governor and the Massachusetts General Court and is a frequent focal point for civic events in Beacon Hill.
