Old Bluecoat School, Thatcham

The Old Bluecoat School, also known as St Thomas’ Chapel, is a historic Grade I listed building located in Thatcham, Berkshire. Originally constructed in 1304 as a chapel dedicated to St Thomas, it served the local community until the 16th century when it fell into disuse for over 150 years. In 1707, it was transformed into a school for poor boys, named Winchcombe Charity, after its founder Lady Frances Winchcombe. The school earned its nickname 'Bluecoat' from the distinctive uniforms worn by its students, making it a notable landmark for both tourists and researchers interested in local history and education.
