Governor William Sprague Mansion

The Governor William Sprague Mansion, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, is a historic house and museum that served as the birthplace of two governors from the Sprague family. Built around 1790 and expanded in 1864, the mansion reflects the grandeur of its era, featuring a wide hall and winding staircase designed for entertaining prominent social figures. The Sprague family was instrumental in the textile industry, with their company being the wealthiest in the U.S. during the Civil War. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is operated by The Cranston Historical Society. Visitors can also learn about the mansion's connection to Civil War history, including a dispute over cannons used by Governor William Sprague IV's regiment, which were restored and returned to the mansion in 2017.
