Anderson Dam seismic risk and 2017 evacuation

Anderson Dam (forming Anderson Reservoir on Coyote Creek) is owned and operated by the Santa Clara Valley Water District. In February 2017 the district issued a precautionary evacuation for downstream neighborhoods-about 14,000 people-because a dam inspection identified seismic vulnerabilities that could increase the risk of catastrophic flooding in a major earthquake. The event prompted accelerated planning for seismic retrofit and long-term lowering of the reservoir while repairs and studies proceeded. The Santa Clara Valley Water District continues to manage Anderson Dam and related public safety communications from its San Jose headquarters.
