Warehouses Medan, Bindjeij and Laboean

The Warehouses Medan, Bindjeij, and Laboean, located near the IJ bay in Amsterdam, were constructed around 1900 and originally served as storage facilities for the Deli Company, primarily for tobacco. Designed by architect Willem Hamer, these neo-Renaissance style buildings reflect the architectural heritage of the Dutch Golden Age. In 1986, they were transformed into residential apartments, preserving their historical features while adding modern amenities. The warehouses are named after locations in Sumatra, Indonesia, highlighting their connection to the former Dutch East Indies. Today, they are recognized as a Rijksmonument, showcasing both their historical significance and architectural beauty, making them an interesting site for tourists and researchers alike.
