Bridewell (New York City jail)

The Bridewell was a historic municipal prison established in 1768 in Manhattan, New York City, on the site of today's City Hall Park. Named after the original Bridewell Prison in London, known for its early rehabilitation efforts, the New York Bridewell served as a jail during the American Revolutionary War, housing prisoners including those involved in plots against George Washington. Although it was not completed until after the war, it played a significant role in the city's penal history until it was replaced by The Tombs in 1838, with some of its materials repurposed in the new structure. This site reflects the evolution of the penal system and the historical context of early American justice.
