Fort Independence (Castle Island) masonry fortification

Fort Independence on Castle Island is a granite-faced coastal fort whose present masonry structure was constructed between 1833 and 1851 on the site of earlier colonial and Revolutionary War-era fortifications. The fort retains original casemates, magazines, and bastions that are surviving 19th-century military masonry. It is managed as a historic site and is one of the more intact examples of coastal fort ruins and restored fortifications in Boston.
