King House (Mayport)

King House, located at 4627 Ocean St in Mayport, Florida, is a historic building with a rich and eerie past. Originally constructed before 1881, it served as a boarding house for sailors and was built on land that was once a Spanish graveyard. After a fire in 1881, it was reconstructed in 1907 by William Joseph King and remained in his family until 1977. The house is known for its hauntings, investigated by paranormal researchers, including those from Duke University's Rhine Institute. Visitors have reported a rocking chair moving on its own, attributed to a tragic story involving a jealous sailor. The building also served as a Catholic church in the 1940s, where congregants experienced mysterious sounds. Ghostly figures, including a helpful 'Little Butler' and an aggressive maid, are said to inhabit the space, along with the spirit of a bride who died on her wedding day. Today, King House operates as the Mayport Cats Program, aiding feral cats while continuing to intrigue those interested in its haunted history.
