Carrières Centrales is a notable series of modernist housing developments located in the Hay Mohammadi district of Casablanca, Morocco, designed in the 1950s by architects Georges Candilis, Shadrach Woods, and Alexis Josic. This innovative project aimed to provide affordable housing alternatives for the working class, particularly for those employed in nearby factories. Influenced by the principles of modernism and communal living, the complex features mid-rise buildings with distinctive balconies, earning local nicknames that evoke historical and architectural references. As a pioneering example of urban planning in the Maghreb, Carrières Centrales reflects a significant effort to improve living conditions and create a sense of community among its residents.
