Pennsylvania Hospital – America's first hospital

Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond and is recognized as the first hospital in the United States. It provided medical care to the city's poor and contributed to early American medical education and practice. The hospital's historic Center City campus retains 18th- and 19th-century buildings and continues to operate as an active teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania.
