Winnipeg Jets relocate to Phoenix as the Phoenix Coyotes

In 1996 the NHL franchise formerly known as the Winnipeg Jets relocated to the Phoenix area and became the Phoenix Coyotes. The team played its home games at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix beginning with the 1996–97 NHL season. The Coyotes remained at America West Arena until moving to Glendale in 2003. The relocation marked the arrival of NHL hockey in Phoenix.
