The Octagon House's wartime role and haunting reports

The Octagon House at 1799 New York Avenue NW served as President James Madison's temporary residence and executive offices after the White House was burned in 1814 during the War of 1812. Now operated as the Octagon Museum, the building appears frequently on lists of Washington, DC 'haunted' locations, with staff and visitors reporting unexplained noises and occasional sightings; such accounts are contested and not universally accepted as factual. The Octagon is preserved and interpreted as a historic house museum by the American Institute of Architects Foundation.
