Whitehouse Block

The Whitehouse Block is a historic commercial building located at 188 Water Street in downtown Augusta, Maine. Constructed in 1865, it is part of a series of four Italianate buildings that emerged after a significant fire that year. Notable for its architectural features, including a modillioned cornice and decorative window hoods, the building was designed by prominent architect Francis H. Fassett for dry goods merchant O.C. Whitehouse. Historically, it housed various businesses, including the Augusta Savings Bank and the United States Pension Agency, and continues to serve commercial purposes today. The Whitehouse Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers exploring Augusta's rich history.
