Tusculum (Amherst, Virginia)

Tusculum is a historic house located near Amherst, Virginia, notable for its Georgian and Federal architectural styles. Built in two phases, the north section dates back to the 1750s, while the south section was added around 1805. Recognized as one of the oldest significant dwellings in the Virginia Piedmont, it was once owned by Elijah Fletcher, whose daughter founded Sweet Briar College. The house was acquired for preservation in 2003 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Although plans to restore it on the college campus were ultimately abandoned due to high costs, it was purchased in 2014 by a local couple with intentions to rebuild it nearby. The Tusculum Institute at Sweet Briar College, named after the house, focuses on local history and historic preservation.
