Mechanics' Institute (historic educational and cultural institution)

The Mechanics' Institute was founded in 1854 as an educational organization for working men and maintains a lending library and cultural programming at its downtown headquarters. The institute is known for operating the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club, one of the oldest continuously operating chess clubs in the United States. Its long history of lectures, classes, and public events ties it to San Francisco's civic and intellectual development since the 19th century.
