Field of Empty Chairs

The outdoor Field of Empty Chairs at the Oklahoma City National Memorial consists of 168 individual chairs, one for each person killed in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The chairs are arranged in nine rows that correspond to the floors of the Murrah Building; smaller chairs are used to represent the children among the victims. The installation is set on the footprint of the former building and is intended as a contemplative remembrance of each life lost.
