Originally founded as the Young Men's Christian Union, the YMCA was supported by a generous donation from William Wallace Smith, a local benefactor. The building features intricate ornamental details, including a molded cornice and elegant interior finishes. Although the YMCA has relocated, the building remains significant, housing county offices and businesses, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, making it a point of interest for tourists and researchers alike.
