Eastern Market - 19th-Century Public Market and 2007 Fire

Eastern Market on Capitol Hill opened in its current brick building in 1873 and has operated as a public market for over a century. A major fire on March 10, 2007, destroyed the market's south hall; the building was restored and the market reopened after renovations in 2009. The market remains a working historic marketplace with vendors, artists, and a weekly weekend market.
