Castro Camera / Harvey Milk storefront

The building at 575 Castro Street is the former site of Castro Camera, the camera shop operated by Harvey Milk in the early 1970s that became a base for his civic organizing in the Castro district. Milk used the storefront and its community presence while running successful campaigns that culminated in his 1977 election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The site is widely recognized in accounts of LGBTQ political history in San Francisco.
