Manhattan Building (Muskogee, Oklahoma)

The Manhattan Building, also known as the Phoenix Building, is a historic skyscraper in Muskogee, Oklahoma, standing at 107 feet tall with eight stories. Completed in 1911, it was originally intended for the Manhattan Construction Company, Oklahoma's first incorporated business. Designed in the Sullivanesque architectural style, it features two-story columns and a decorative cornice. The building's large windows were crucial for ventilation during hot summers before air conditioning was common. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 due to its architectural significance. The building is part of a group of early 20th-century skyscrapers in Muskogee and has a rich history, including a notable transformation when it was sold to the Phoenix Clothing Company, which enhanced its design with a prominent rotating electric sign.
