St. Elizabeths Hospital (Cedar Hill) - First Federal Psychiatric Hospital

St. Elizabeths Hospital, founded in the 1850s as the Government Hospital for the Insane, was the first federally operated psychiatric hospital in the United States. The campus in Southeast Washington contains 19th- and early-20th-century institutional buildings and landscaped grounds designed to provide therapeutic environments of the period. Portions of the St. Elizabeths campus have been designated a National Historic Landmark district and the site has been the focus of preservation and adaptive reuse projects in recent decades.
