African Meeting House - center of Black abolitionist life

The African Meeting House, built in 1806 on Beacon Hill, is the oldest surviving Black church building in the United States and served as a religious, educational, and civic center for Boston’s free Black community. It was a key site for abolitionist organizing and public meetings and is an anchor of the Black Heritage Trail. The building is preserved as part of the Museum of African American History and is frequently cited in local accounts of Boston’s abolitionist past.
