Embarcadero Freeway (removed waterfront elevated roadway)

An elevated freeway once ran along San Diego's downtown waterfront adjacent to the present convention center and harbor. The Embarcadero Freeway was dismantled and removed in the early 1990s, reopening the Embarcadero to surface traffic, pedestrians, and waterfront redevelopment. Its removal is widely credited with reconnecting downtown to the bay and enabling later projects along Harbor Drive.
