Hadrian's Library

Hadrian's Library, built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132, is a remarkable ruin located on the north side of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This monumental structure features a grand entrance with Karystian marble columns and Corinthian order propylon, leading to an inner courtyard adorned with a decorative pool. The library housed papyrus rolls and included reading and lecture halls, all embellished with gilded ceilings and marble walls. Although it suffered significant damage during the Herulian invasion in 267, it was later repaired and integrated into the Roman city walls. The site also bears remnants of three Byzantine churches, including the first cathedral of Athens, Megali Panagia, and showcases a colossal statue of the goddess Nike, discovered during excavations in 1988. This historical site offers a glimpse into the rich cultural and architectural heritage of ancient Athens.
