R & S Building

The R & S Building, also known as the Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center, is a historic structure in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood. Designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White in 1903, it originally served as part of Bellevue Hospital, housing the pathological department and a dormitory for male staff. The building has a rich history, including its role as the city's morgue and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner until 1961. After years of vacancy, it was renovated and reopened in 2001 as an intake center for children entering foster care. The building features Italian Renaissance architecture, with a distinctive U-plan design and beautiful interior details, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in New York's architectural and social history.
