Barton Springs Pool and the Barton Springs salamander

Barton Springs Pool is a natural pool in Zilker Park fed by groundwater that discharges from the Edwards Aquifer through limestone fractures beneath the pool. The site is the known habitat of the federally endangered Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum), a species endemic to the Barton Springs segment of the aquifer. Because the pool is spring-fed, its water temperature remains relatively constant (around the high 60s Fahrenheit) year-round.
