Rodin Museum (Paul Cret design)

Designed by architect Paul Cret and opened in 1929, the Rodin Museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was created to house the collection donated by film exhibitor Jules E. Mastbaum. The limestone building and its formal sculpture garden were conceived in a restrained Beaux-Arts/Neoclassical idiom. The museum contains one of the largest assemblies of Auguste Rodin's works outside Paris, including multiple casts of The Thinker and The Gates of Hell. Its siting and design reflect early 20th-century museum planning in Philadelphia.
