Porth yr Aur

Porth yr Aur, a Grade I listed 13th-century fortification in Caernarfon, served as the main seaward entrance to the walled town and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd. Constructed under the orders of Edward I between 1283 and 1292, it was designed by military architect James of St George. The gate has a rich history, including damage during the Welsh revolt in 1294 and later renovations. Since 1854, it has housed the Royal Welsh Yacht Club, which has royal patronage. Architecturally, Porth yr Aur features twin towered gatehouses and a crenelated barbican, making it a significant historical and architectural landmark for visitors and researchers alike.
