Austin Hall (Harvard University)

Austin Hall is a historic classroom building at Harvard Law School, designed by the renowned architect H. H. Richardson. Constructed between 1882 and 1884 in the Romanesque Revival style, it was the first building specifically built for an American law school and serves as a significant architectural landmark on the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The building features a unique T-shaped layout with striking polychrome sandstone exteriors and a notable entryway with Romanesque arches. Inside, it houses large classrooms designed for the Socratic method and the Ames Courtroom, where students practice legal arguments before judges, often including a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Austin Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a must-visit for tourists and researchers interested in legal education and historic architecture.
