Alcatraz Island Lighthouse (first West Coast lighthouse)

Alcatraz Island’s lighthouse was first lit in 1854 and is documented as the first lighthouse constructed on the United States West Coast. The lighthouse sits on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and historically guided maritime traffic entering and leaving the bay. Visitors access Alcatraz Island via ferries that depart from the city's Alcatraz landing at Pier 33.
