Caffè Trieste (North Beach espresso and Beat landmark)

Caffè Trieste opened in 1956 at 601 Vallejo Street after founder Giovanni Giotta brought Italian-style espresso service to San Francisco. The café quickly became a gathering place for Beat Generation writers and artists, including Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. It is widely cited as one of the first espresso houses on the U.S. West Coast and played a central role in North Beach's literary and cultural life. The café continues to operate and displays memorabilia documenting its artistic associations.
