U.S. Capitol grounds archaeological investigations

Archaeological fieldwork on the U.S. Capitol grounds has recorded colonial- and early federal-period building foundations, outbuildings, privies, and artifact deposits that illuminate 18th- and 19th-century urban development on Capitol Hill. Investigations conducted during construction, landscaping, and infrastructure projects have yielded ceramics, glass, building materials, and evidence used to interpret construction practices and labor histories associated with the Capitol. Reports and conservation work have been produced by the Architect of the Capitol and affiliated researchers.
