United States Custom House (Philadelphia)

The United States Custom House, a historic federal building in Philadelphia, was constructed between 1932 and 1934 in the Art Deco style by the architectural firm Ritter & Shay. Standing 17 stories tall, it occupies a full city block near Independence National Historical Park and reflects Philadelphia's rich maritime history. Originally built to accommodate the expanding U.S. Customs Service, the building played a significant role in the economic recovery during the Great Depression by employing over 4,000 workers. Its striking architecture features a classical base with a bold Art Deco tower, adorned with intricate murals by local artist George Harding that celebrate commerce and industry. The Custom House is not only a functional government office but also a monument to Philadelphia's historical significance as a major port, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
