Islais Creek (culverted mouth at Heron's Head Park)

Islais Creek historically drained much of southeastern San Francisco but was progressively channelized, culverted, and filled during the 19th and 20th centuries for development. The tidal mouth and remaining channel are now represented by the Islais Creek Channel and adjacent restored marshlands. Heron's Head Park sits on the shoreline next to that channel and the former creek mouth, where buried reaches of Islais Creek discharge into the bay. Large stretches of the creek’s original course run beneath parts of Bayview, Hunters Point, and Visitacion Valley.
