St. Mary's Food Bank (world's first food bank)

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance was founded in Phoenix in 1967 by John van Hengel and is widely credited as the world's first food bank. The organization created a model for collecting surplus food from businesses and redistributing it to people in need, a system later replicated globally. St. Mary's remains a major regional nonprofit operating food distribution and community programs in Arizona.
